Health care benefits are critical for the disabled. Many individuals who are waiting for a Social Security Disability hearing and decision do not have adequate health care coverage. There are programs designed to help individuals who are struggling to get health insurance.
State Programs
If you meet certain low-income requirements, you may be eligible for health insurance through the Department of Public Welfare. You should go to your local office and apply. Available programs include Access, Gateway, UPMC For You, and Unison.
The state of Pennsylvania offers Adult Basic Medical Coverage for residents ages 19 to 64 who meet specific income requirements. There is a fee of $36 per month for this program and there is a waiting list. The contact telephone number is 1-800-462-2742.
