Thanks in large part to the hard work by the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, the federal Social Security Administration (SSA) recognizes that women in the late stages of ovarian cancer should qualify for benefits under the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program.
If you have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, do not wait to begin the SSDI claim process. Under SSA rules, it must appear that you will not be able to work for at least 12 consecutive months but you do not have to wait 12 months to file your claim. By filing your claim immediately, you may become qualified to receive benefits immediately upon review of your claim. You may even qualify for benefits for any time you were unable to work while undergoing treatment.
The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance Website* reports that the following types of ovarian cancer automatically qualify:
All tumors except germ cell tumors, with at least one of the following:
a. Tumor extension beyond the pelvis; for example, tumor implants on peritoneal, omental, or bowel surfaces.
b. Metastases to or beyond the regional lymph nodes.
c. Recurrent following initial antineoplastic therapy.
