Can I get Social Security Disability and Short Term or Long Term Disability?
To be eligible for Social Security Disability you must be unable to work for longer than 12 months. If you are receiving Short Term Disability and expect to return to work in less than 12 months you will not be eligible for Social Security Disability.
If you are receiving Long Term Disability benefits you may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits too. Most Long Term Disability insurers will require that you also apply for Social Security Disability benefits or your monthly benefit will be reduced. In many instances, if you are awarded Social Security Disability Benefits your monthly Long Term Disability benefits will decrease. However, this does not mean that your total monthly income will decrease. Once you are awarded Social Security Disability benefits, you may have to pay back your Long Term Disability carrier from your back benefits.
