Panic Disorder

Panic disorder and Social Security Disability

Panic disorder can cause extreme changes in behavior at home, school, work and family. With panic disorder, at least four of the following symptoms suddenly occur within 10 minutes: chest pain or discomfort, fear of dying, fear of losing control, shortness of breath, dizziness or faintness, trembling or shaking, heart palpitations, hyperventilation, sweating, chills or hot flashes, numbness, nausea, feeling of unreality, feelings of detachment or feeling of choking. Attacks may be followed by at least 1 month of persistent fear of having another attack. Many people fear additional panic attacks or think that they are having a heart attack.

Panic attacks often occur with depression and agoraphobia

Panic attacks may often be listed on social security applications with other psychiatric conditions like depression and one or more phobias, such as agoraphobia, the fear of leaving one's home. It has been estimated that about 10 percent of Americans may experience one panic attack per year, and one in about sixty individuals suffer from panic disorder at one time in their lives.

Many people live with panic attacks and are able to work, however many people are not able to. Severe panic attacks often limit you from being able to work. If you have suffered from panic disorder and you are not able to work, we may be able to help you obtain SSD or SSI benefits.
