SSD and Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Can You Get Disability Benefits After Drug or Alcohol Use?

According to some statistics, over 22 million people have substance dependence or abuse problems in the United States. These people face different consequences of their using. From losing important relationships with friends and family, to losing housing, jobs or even their health, drug and alcohol abuse has the ability to turn lives upside down.

You should know that it is not possible to receive disability benefits solely on alcoholism or addiction. The Social Security Administration does not pay benefits to people whose disabilities are caused or made worse by drug and alcohol abuse.

A history of substance abuse? Can I still get benefits?

If you are a recovering addict and are suffering from a disabling condition, you may still be eligible for benefits. Do not let past abuse stop you from applying for Social Security Disability or from appealing your denial. If you are clean and sober and are suffering from a physical or mental disability that keeps you from working you may be entitled to monthly checks from Social Security.
