Social Security Disability Benefits for Wounded Warriors
Wounded warriors and their families are people who have truly gave given their lives to their country. They deserve the support - often financial, emotional and medical support - to provide needed round-the-clock care for their serious injuries when veterans cannot take care of themselves.
In order to help the large number of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, the Social Security Administration is working with the Veterans Administration to speed up the application process.
This expedited process applies for service members who became disabled while on active duty on or before October 1, 2001. Injured veterans will need to provide the following documents in order to show that they qualify for SSD benefits:
- Birth certificate or proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency
- Form DD 214 if discharged
- W-2 Form or last year's tax return
- Military or workers' compensation
- Social Security numbers of your spouse and children
- Checking or savings account numbers, if you have an account
- Name, address and phone of another person in case you are unavailable, and;
- All medical records you can easily obtain from the military or civilian sources
More than ever before, veterans are experiencing a host of life-changing mental and physical impairments:
- Agent Orange exposure
- Radiation exposure
- Gulf War Illness/Gulf War Syndrome
- Cardiac/vascular disorders
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other psychiatric problems
- Orthopedic injuries
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Arthritis
- Cancer
- Diabetes
